Nader Gammas
Born and raised in the United States, Nader Gammas is of Syrian origin. He holds a B.Sc, in Architecture from the University of Jordan, and an MFA in Lighting Design from Parsons School of Design in New York.
Nader Gammas didn’t always know he wanted to work with light, but it was his fascination with form and functionality from a young age that eventually placed him on that trajectory.
“If you strip down architecture and interiors you are ultimately only left with the structure and lighting. Lighting can allow people to feel a certain way, whether it’s comfort, excitement, relaxation, and so on.”
Nader Gammas debuted his first lighting collection at Art Dubai in March 2017 to great success and garnered the attention of international design gallery Todd Merrill which signed him on shortly thereafter. Nader went on to be represented by Studio Twenty-Seven.
Nader Gammas Lighting Design is a studio specializing in project-specific, customized lighting solutions. NGLD’s mission is to elevate spaces using light. Using foundational design principles, the studio works to extract historical references, conceive of relevant narratives and identify tools that evoke emotion and curiosity. At the forefront of the practice are Nader Gammas’ extensive experience and technical knowledge of lighting, which is paramount to design success.

Nader Gammas’ contribution; Nimbus, a frosted acrylic chair, is an experimentation on the permanence of matter and a testament to nature’s symbiotic relationship with all four elements; air, water, earth, and fire. Embracing simplicity, purity, and subtlety in his designs, people experiencing his work have room to explore their sensations and emotions and question the permanence of matter and the subjectivity of perception. The chosen material for the Nimbus chair, acrylic, produces a surreal, dream-like quality, with translucent contours bound together by light and air. The sculptural chair is juxtaposed by its ever-changing ethereal quality, as light, color, and body heat pass through it, transforming it time and again. Gammas’ work demands attention; the contrasts within the chair, romantic yet austere, solid yet luminous, embody a pulsing halo of energy as it interacts with its environment. Nader Gammas entered the world of design as a light specialist. His latest foray into functional art incorporates his ethos of objects that are not only aesthetically beautiful and superbly functional but, more importantly, engaging with their surroundings.

The Fin Palm was designed for a foyer space for a villa on the Palm Jumeirah, hence the name. It was programmed to fit within the double-height space, straddling the stairs and avoiding the first-floor catwalk. The Fin was designed for a residential dining room with a relatively low ceiling. The requirement was to focus most of its light on the dining table, with minimal spread into the room. Coffee is the primary source of inspiration behind the Bubbles design. Firstly, as inspired by coffee plantations and mountainous regions, and second, by coffee droplets that bubble through the filter in the brewing process.
