Sophie Coryndon
b.
1975
Based in
East Sussex, UK
As the daughter of a cabinet maker, Coryndon grew up surrounded by exotic materials and exceptional craftsmanship. A rich tapestry of inspiration; illuminated manuscripts, medieval altarpieces, historical ornament, cabinets of curiosity, myths and magic realism make up the groundwork of her work.
“Creating things has always been my way of understanding and making sense of the world – so I don’t know if I ‘became’ an artist or whether that’s just what I always have been”
‘Stitched’ slowly into each piece is an exploration of beauty and wonder, a quest for awe and a calling to re-enchant, shining a light on or ‘illuminating in gold’ what we have and what we stand to lose. Coryndon’s work has been shown at the leading international art and design fairs including Tefaf, PAD and Design Miami/Basel.
She has worked with many high profile architects and interior designers including Peter Marino for Dior and Chanel. Her 2022 travelling altar piece, Hortus Conclusus was purchased by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of art for their permanent collection.
“I feel we live in an age where we are crying out for a sense of wonder. In my Sussex studio, I reimagine historical decorative techniques which combine ancient and modern materials, illuminating the intricate enchantments of the natural world around me”
