Ange Dakouo
b.
1990
Based in
Bamako, Mali
Rooted in the symbolism of Donso hunter amulets, his signature "woven gri-gris" are intricate compositions of folded newspaper and thread, reflecting resilience, protection, and collective memory. His work bridges craftsmanship and conceptual depth, forming textured landscapes that evoke themes of unity and vulnerability. Dakouo’s practice continues to expand the dialogue between cultural heritage and modern artistic expression.
“My technique, which I call "the woven gris-gris", is inspired by the amulets worn by Malian traditional hunters : the Dozos. I customize my "gris-gris" with cardboard, newspapers, and then weave them together to create a harmonious universe, through which the "gris-gris" represent people who are supposed to protect each other”
Ange Dakouo’s work translates the energy of traditional Malian artifacts into striking contemporary compositions, each piece embodying protection and solidarity. His use of repurposed materials, cardboard, newspapers, and textiles, blurs the line between art and storytelling, weaving narratives of identity, security, and human fragility.
His participation in major international showcases underscores his growing global recognition.
“The intertwining of textile art and paper art is at the core of my artistic practice. I strive to create a unique visual experience by harmoniously blending these two mediums. To balance the use of paper and textiles, I play with textures, patterns, and manipulation techniques to create works that transcend the boundaries between the two mediums”
