Cécilia Lusven
b.
1987
Based in
San Francisco, USA
Using leather offcuts and dead-stock threads, sourced from shoemaking and bookbinding, each thread and fringe is meticulously trimmed and hand-inserted one by one to trace the journey of the material. Her work intentionally reclaims devalued textile practices and elevates them into contemplative compositions that bridge craft and fine art.
“My process is not just about reclaiming materials; I see my work as an exploration of landscapes both internal and external, encouraging a reflection on our interactions with both our environment and one another”
Cécilia Lusven
With formative training at ENSCI Les Ateliers in Paris, Lusven moved to San Francisco to pursue her personal weaving practice. Exhibited at venues including the de Young Museum Open and TINT’s Unforgotten exhibition, her pieces challenge industrialised aesthetics by foregrounding labour, material honesty, and emotional resonance.
Each limited artwork invited viewers to reflect on consumption, memory, and the poetic potential of what is often overlooked in contemporary life.
“Through my work, I desire to bring a sense of awareness and appreciation for the dedication and intricacy that lies at the heart of weaving. Each piece is a testament to the laborious process, where every hand-cut fringe is meticulously inserted, one by one, revealing the journey of each thread – coiled, warped, beamed, threaded, tensed, and finally woven”
