Dennis Lin
b.
1976
Based in
Toronto, Canada
Working across wood, metal, and salvaged materials, Lin’s work draws on the imagery of sedimentary formations to evoke the passage of time and the emotional weight of place. His pieces, ranging from suspended mobiles to large-scale reliefs are informed by a reverence for natural processes and the histories embedded within reclaimed resources.
“I’m interested in how mobiles demonstrate basic physical principles, and at times, seem to defy them. There’s a kind of clarity that comes from watching how they move and respond to space.”
Operating between his off-grid studio in Kimberley and his experimental space in Toronto, Lin’s practice is rooted in sustainability, craftsmanship, and a deep engagement with cultural heritage. Lin’s work has been commissioned by institutions and clients including Aman Tokyo, Four Seasons New York, and Nobu Toronto, and is held in both public and private collections.
“Salvaging is deeply embedded in my practice, the sourcing, gathering, and processing of materials is as much emotional as it is physical. The embodied energy these materials carry is often beyond comprehension, holding histories that shape”
His recent exhibitions, such as “While You Were Away” and “I’m Not Welcome”, reflect a personal exploration of loss, cultural identity, and the preservation of memory. Through his sculptural language, Lin continues to contribute to the evolving dialogue of contemporary design.
