Sabine Marcelis
b.
1985
Based in
Rotterdam, Netherlands
Working across furniture, lighting, and installations, she transforms resin, glass, and marble into pure, luminous forms that challenge perception and play with transparency, reflection, and depth. Her work blurs the boundaries between art and design, offering pieces that feel both ethereal and sculptural.
“I always try to design in a way where things have very simple shapes. I'm definitely a big fan of minimal shapes like nothing too decorative or no sort of form language that's unnecessary or takes away from the materiality”
With a process rooted in experimentation and material research, Marcelis collaborates with master craftsmen and cutting-edge technologies to refine materials into their most striking expressions, achieving new and imaginative visual effects. Whether through monolithic furniture or immersive spatial interventions, her work is defined by a meticulous balance of precision and intuition.
With a signature aesthetic that is both minimal and sensorial, highlighted by a pastel color palette, Marcelis creates pieces that captivate, and act as immersive sensory experiences rather than static objects — where function is defined by interaction, and aesthetics are both refined and distinctive.
In my opinion, two things make exceptionally good work possible design icons: When a design bears a very specific signature – and still manages to appear timeless. I think that with many iconic designs, function doesn’t have to be the main focus. Things that have a very well thought-out function do not automatically become icons. That alone is not enough. They must endure, remain exciting. That’s why I always try to find this timelessness in my work. I think it’s important to bring things into the world that aren’t just trendy – or something that people might want to get rid of in a few years’ time”
