Cairn Series & Roseate Tern
Year: 2010 Commissioned by COLLECTIONAL Debuted at Design Biennale Rotterdam
COLLECTIONAL and Laurids Gallée are proud to unveil Cairn & Roseate Tern, a striking new series of luminous light sculptures, premiering at the Design Biennale Rotterdam.
This collaboration reflects COLLECTIONAL’s ongoing dedication to championing exceptional craftsmanship and Gallée’s distinctive creative vision.

Inspired by the ancient tradition of stacking stones as meaningful markers, Cairn reimagines this concept through six to seven sculptural lights. Each piece is a study of materiality, combining polished surfaces with translucent layers that interact with light to produce optical distortions. As viewers move through the space, they experience a dynamic interplay of movement and stillness, where light transforms the organic forms into ever-shifting compositions.

This series of six pieces reflects Gallée’s pursuit of balance, solidity and weightlessness, reality and illusion, function and statement, while embracing the meticulous craftsmanship often reserved for smaller ornamental objects. The collaboration provided a platform for expanding Gallée’s exploration of scale and ritual through collectible design.

Roseate Tern is a collectible pendant light that channels the elegance of its bird inspiration through an elongated sculptural form. Crafted from polymer resin and aluminium, it integrates a 24V LED, producing a soft, ambient illumination that flows across its polished and translucent surfaces. The play of light and material evokes the motion and delicacy of flight, creating a dynamic focal point for modern interiors.
