Kooij is a Dutch design studio pushing the boundaries of material experimentation to create furniture and objects that are bold, playful, and unconventional. Embracing vibrant color, unexpected forms, and sustainable innovation, the brand transforms recycled and industrial materials into striking, functional pieces that challenge traditional design narratives. The studio has created new materials such as ‘Elephant Skin’, transforming recycled plastic into new tactile and textural materials used in innovative designs.
“By designing process-first, Dirk van der Kooij crafts furniture according to the will of unlikely materials. The resultant collection grows slowly, in step with machine and material discovery”
Founded by Dirk van der Kooij, the studio merges advanced production techniques with a hands-on, sculptural approach. Using recycled plastics, repurposed materials, and custom-engineered processes, Kooij crafts pieces that feel both futuristic and deeply connected to the physicality of making. With an ethos of experimentation and reinvention, the brand reinvents contemporary furniture, offering designs that are as dynamic as the spaces they inhabit. Select pieces live within the permanent collections of the Stedelijk Museum, MoMA New York, MoMA San Francisco, Vitra Design Museum, Design Museum London, and the National Museum in Oslo.
“A romance with unconventional materials necessitates that form follow process. Our family of house-developed presses, robots, and extruders have directly shaped the identity of the collection. The limitations of these imperfect machines have gifted a visual language which envelops the function, tactility, and beloved oddness of the Kooij collection”
