The Shape of Things to Come signals the beginning of a new chapter. As COLLECTIONAL’s inaugural exhibition, it brings together iconic works by renowned design houses and exclusive commissions by emerging and established individual designers, each work chosen for its ability to challenge the boundaries of form.

The exhibition’s title is drawn from the dynamic silhouettes and bold gestures that define the pieces on view. But beyond form, it speaks to a sense of becoming: the future of the gallery, the evolution of design, and Dubai as a growing centre for global creative discourse.

At the heart of the exhibition is Mirage, a new body of work by Sabine Marcelis commissioned exclusively for COLLECTIONAL. Inspired by the shifting urban and natural landscapes of Dubai, Mirage continues Marcelis’ exploration of colour and light, this time through mirrored surfaces that interact with their environment in new and unexpected ways.

It poses essential questions: How does an idea take form? What shape can imagination take? How does design give shape to the world we want to build?

Presented as a vivid constellation of silhouettes, surfaces, and materials, the exhibition moves fluidly between the sculptural and the functional. Works are placed in dynamic relation, light and density, minimalism and excess, transparency and opacity, each creating moments of visual tension and poetic harmony.

The gallery space becomes a terrain of contrasts: icons of historical design rest alongside newly commissioned works, revealing threads of influence and evolution. Central to the space, Sabine Marcelis’ Mirage captures the essence of Dubai’s horizon—reflections, refractions, and shifting light, while other works across stone, glass, metal, textile, and resin offer grounded counterpoints.

With attention to craft, experimentation, and expressive form, The Shape of Things to Come offers a glimpse of what lies ahead. It is a celebration of possibility, of the unexpected, the unbound, and the beauty that is still to be created.

A leading figure in Italian modernism, Angelo Mangiarotti combined rigorous design principles with expressive materiality. Best known for his gravity-joined marble tables from the 1970s, his work reflects a deep sensitivity to function, form, and the inherent qualities of each material.
