Reinder Schmidt
b. 1993 Based in Arnhem, Netherlands
Reinder Schmidt is an artist and fashion designer. His work explores the intersection of material, craft, and artistic expression.
In 2015, he graduated from MAFAD, Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design. His early work in menswear combined traditional tailoring with sportswear and futuristic concepts. This demonstrated his ongoing interest in innovative garment construction. At Arnheim Fashion Group and Hul le Kes, he worked as a designer and product developer. There, he developed a deep appreciation for the making process and the artistry of handcrafted clothing.

The artisanal techniques, the focus on sustainability, and the natural dyeing methods at Hul le Kes had a significant impact on his creative direction. His focus shifted to sustainability and the revaluation of handmade clothing, art, and design. Since 2020, he has had his own art studio.

There, he further develops his artistic practice and explores new forms of creative expression. His fascination with materiality is reflected in his artwork. He transforms leftover fabrics into abstract paintings. By sewing and painting diverse textiles, he emphasizes the inherent textures, patterns, and depth of the material. His use of a single color draws attention to the interplay of structure and form. The leftover fabrics find a new life in his ‘Textile Landscapes’, a tribute to the material, the craft, and color.
