Crystal Tables
Year: 2024 Commissioned by COLLECTIONAL Exhibited during Urban Fabric Group Show
Kensaku Oshiru reveals the Crystal Tables for his first collaboration with a gallery. The translucent and geometric details create additional depth within each piece, giving life to the precious Onyx stones.
Oshiro wanted to crystallise a ‘design exploration’ within these objects, which could be discovered through an engaged interaction with them.

The main feature of this collection is a harmonious interaction between geometry and light. Due to the natural translucency of onyx and the mass of the gemstones that were employed, a shadow is drawn that delicately emphasises and outlines the geometry at play.
Oshiro experimented with a number of variations before settling on an angle of 120 degrees, which gave the best result in terms of both geometric and shadow contrast. From any viewpoint, the proportions and combination of elements are devised to be never identical from one to the other while always maintaining a composite harmony.

As a designer, Oshiro always strives for what is essential in terms of both aesthetics and function while keeping a keen eye on optimisation of resources. Crystal, his first exploration outside of the realm of the industrial environment, prompted the designer to develop objects that are free of restraints from streamlined manufacturing processes, and therefore allowed multiple interpretations of one concept within the same volume. Oshiro believes this method could serve as an intelligent means to enhance the value of scarce natural resources like stone.

Fundamental to Oshiro’s work is an ongoing, intuitive, research-based pursuit of harmony between objects, humans, and space within context.
Over time, from project to project and within a wider investigation into aesthetics, he has been devising and refining a series of principles and rules with which he engages through a personal and instinctive methodology, and then synthesises this process into a solution bespoke for each project.
