Why I love sofas...

Article by Iman Naji

It started as a playful exercise: each member of the team was assigned a furniture typology: “If you were a piece, what would you be?

There were lamps, consoles, mirrors, even a very confident bookshelf.

Without knowing my secret obsession, they gave me the sofa.

And honestly? They nailed it. Now, whether their reasons matched mine or not…is a conversation for another day.

I really, truly, unapologetically love sofas. Not in a casual, “oh that’s comfy” kind of way. I mean in a deep, committed, borderline poetic way. Sofas are my soft spot; literally and figuratively.

They’re the unsung heroes of the home. The place where life happens in all its glorious mess.

Sofas are where life spills out, half dinner table, half therapy session, fully committed to catching crumbs, secrets, existential spirals and spontaneous 2 am revelations from friends who swore they were “just passing by.” They absorb it all and they never complain.

Design-wise, they’re deceptively complex. A sofa must be sculptural yet soft, iconic yet inviting. It’s the anchor of a room, the emotional centrepiece, the piece that says “I live here” before the art is hung or the lighting is right.

I love a sofa that makes you feel like you’ve arrived. Not just in the room, but in your life. Yes, I am dramatic. You love it.

The lines between fashion and design are no longer blurred, they are braided. Both are languages of identity. Both ask: Who are you, and how do you want to be seen? Or more importantly; how do you want to feel?

And let’s be honest: in a society that’s constantly asking us to stand up, hustle and move faster, sofas remind us to sit down. To breathe. To be.

Sofas don’t perform. They just are. Beautiful, dependable, and always there, like the best kind of friend who knows when to speak and when to simply sit beside you.
