Jumeirah Beach Hotel

Design: EO (Engineering Office)

Scope of work: Feature Straw Marquetry Column and Decorative Bathroom Panels

For the refurbishment of the iconic Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai, COLLECTIONAL was commissioned by Bond Interiors to deliver a one-of-a-kind sculptural column for the main lobby, along with a set of decorative panels for the bathrooms.

Designed by EO (Engineering Office), the column serves as a central design feature, an architectural sculpture that blends material artistry with technical precision.

Realized through intercontinental collaboration, the project exemplifies COLLECTIONAL’s strength in coordinating complex production chains across borders. The core structure was developed in Italy by WOOD-SKIN®, using their proprietary digital fabrication methods to achieve the column’s intricate geometry. Once completed, the shell was shipped to Thailand, where Alexander Lamont’s studio meticulously applied the straw marquetry finish by hand.

This process, splitting, softening, and flattening untreated rye straw into luminous ribbons, required time, precision, and an intimate understanding of material behavior. Assembled piece by piece, the marquetry reflects light with organic sheen, giving the column a refined, ever-shifting presence.

From digital modeling and production in Milan, to hand-finishing in Bangkok, to final installation in Dubai, COLLECTIONAL oversaw every stage of this global journey, seamlessly bridging craft, innovation, and logistics to bring the vision to life.
