Migration

By Jan Ernst

Year: 2024 Commissioned by COLLECTIONAL

Commissioned by Gallery COLLECTIONAL, this sculptural mural captures the essence of movement and transformation.

Inspired by the annual departure of swallows to Europe, Jan draws a poetic parallel between bird and human migrations, both driven by the search for better opportunities and metaphorical warmth elsewhere.

Rooted in a vivid childhood memory, the work reflects the swallows’ use of local mud and clay to build their nests. Jan merges mediums such as ceramics, plaster, and bronze to bring distinct divisions to life. ‘Migration’ highlights the pursuit of new horizons and the continuous search for a place to call home. Through this mural, he aims to evoke a sense of empathy and connection while celebrating the resilience and diversity of both human and animal journeys.

The installation features an array of avian references that capture the dynamic patterns formed by birds flocking together during migration. These abstract, organic shapes symbolize unity and the strength of communal journeys, reflecting the interconnectedness of all beings. A central theme is the relationship between the part and the whole: each sculptural piece is essential to the larger composition, just as every individual plays a crucial role in the broader human experience of migration.

Crafted from ceramic and bronze, the materials were chosen for their complementary qualities and symbolic resonance. Ceramic, with its malleability and earthy texture, echoes the natural essence of the swallows' nests. Bronze elements, cast from original clay versions, preserve every fingerprint and flow, elevating the work through contrast between matte and reflective surfaces.

The mural is structured around a large negative space, flanked by three sculptural ‘wings’ that suggest birds in flight and evoke movement and freedom. This composition encourages viewers to explore from multiple angles, revealing new details and connections. Two floor lights, integrated into the installation, extend the work from a wall-based piece into a sculptural experience on the floor.
