RED OR NOT?

A story from the ground directed by COLLECTIONAL

COLLECTIONAL Newsletter: May 2026 Issue

As the season turns into a parade of flashes, velvet ropes, extravaganza, and highly curated arrivals, from the steps of the Met Gala to the glamour coastline of the Cannes Film Festival, we found ourselves scrolling. Again. And again. (Not like Fred) Drawn to something we almost never think about.

Not the gowns.

Not the jewels.

Not even the faces.

But what’s under all that effort.

A vibrant strip.

Quietly doing the job.

Rihanna has walked it.

Jay-Z has owned it.

Eva Longoria has been publicly betrayed by it.

Activists have turned it into a stage.

And then there was Angelina Jolie’s leg.

No suspense here. It’s the red carpet.

Long before it became a photo-op, the red carpet was never just decorative. In ancient myth, somewhere in 458 B.C., it meant divine access, a VIP pass for gods. Then Hollywood arrived, and suddenly it was less about divinity, more about visibility.

And somewhere between a perfectly timed entrance and a misstep that now lives rent-free on the internet,

We asked ourselves: Does a carpet ever get tired of being the most grounded thing in the room?

What does it feel like to carry spectacle on repeat,

season after season, foot after foot, headline after headline?

To absorb triumph and disaster with equal politeness.

To be walked on constantly, and still somehow remain the main stage.

Because red or not, a carpet is more than that.

It takes the steps.

It takes the hesitation.

It takes the fall.

And even the stains that keep dry cleaning businesses very lucrative.

Perhaps it’s simply this:

A carpet doesn’t perform,

A carpet doesn’t arrive,

A carpet simply continues,

holding everything that happens above it.

And perhaps that's all we need.
