Day and Night Sculpture

Day and Night sculptures, created by Tiffany Loy for her debut in the Middle East, explores the commonly found reflection of sunlight on glass in cityscapes. The cool greens of the textile weaved with warmer reds, yellows, and pinks creates a fascinating visual noise.
Loy further explores textile through the lens of gravity, allowing the symmetrical weaving of Night to drape down and define its’ own fluidity.

Day and Night stand as a captivating pair of woven sculptures, each intricately reflecting the dynamic cityscape with its varied materials and hues. Crafted on industrial jacquard looms, traditionally overlooked as tools for 3D objects, Day is stretched onto a zig-zagging frame, offering a variety of viewing angles even from a fixed point, while Night is supported by two frames at both ends of its elongated form, its natural curved silhouette brought to life by the weight and tension in the textile.

Their expansive faceted forms seamlessly marry the inherent mathematical beauty of their structure with the urban architectural silhouettes that inspire them. The theme of sunlight reflection on skyscrapers was chosen as it neatly encapsulates the interaction between the man-made world and the constant force of nature, the warmth of the sun.

The sober, muted green hue calms the city without feeling cold, creating a mesmerising interplay of light and shadow across their surfaces. The transient reflections of sunlight on glass add to the allure. As observers move around the artwork, the colours on the facets shift, evoking the ephemeral nature of reflections.
