Michael Anastassiades is a Cypriot-born, London-based designer whose practice encompasses product, spatial interventions and experimental works, often transcending the distinctions between different fields of creativity.
Anastassiades’ practice contemplates both industrial production and artisan techniques. In doing so, it expands into a vivid, nuanced balance between improvisation and structure, control and intuition.
With a career spanning more than 20 years, Anastassiades has conceived lights, furniture and objects characterised by a poetic yet rigorous interpretation of technology, materials and functions.
His work draws inspiration from many sources, which he distills into pure, simple structures. From nature to archaic references of his native Cyprus, the history of Modernism, very personal memories, art and everyday life, he transforms a rich set of diverse references into a timeless vocabulary of form and structure.
The Michael Anastassiades Studio has collaborated with various manufacturers, including Flos, B&B Italia, Herman Miller, Cassina, Molteni, Bang & Olufsen, Puiforcat, Fratelli Fantini, Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, Roda, Lobmeyr, Salvatori, Svenskt Tenn, Carl Auböck and Sigmar London, Coedition and SCP. The Studio has also designed limited-edition collections for Nilufar Gallery in Milan, Dansk Møbelkunst Gallery in Copenhagen and Taka Ishii Gallery in Japan.

‘A few years ago I saw an acorn vase by Estrid Ericson, produced by Svenskt Tenn. I loved the simple poetry of an object of that nature, growing a single acorn. It was the hope for early spring, especially coming from a country with such heavy and dark winters. I became obsessed with the simple idea of suspending a seed on the surface of the water, submerged. Just the right level for it to germinate, with the possibility of it supporting itself in the absence of soil, allowing it to stand upright; exposed, all in clear view.’ The series consists of seven different models to be positioned over a drinking glass of your choice, each designed to suit a specific seed or stone.

The Greek philosopher Socrates urged young people to look at themselves in mirrors so that, if they were beautiful, they would become worthy of their beauty. The Beauty Mirror takes inspiration from those ancient polished surfaces, offering a reflective image with a golden glow. This mirror challenges the notion of what a true reflection is, both in terms of consistency and colour.

Tip of the Tongue consists of a table lamp, wall and ceiling-mounted sconce, all which feature an interesting illusion: a luminous mouth-blown opaline sphere appears to roll down the edge of a solid polished brass base. This delicate gesture of a sphere poised on the edge of the surface evokes the familiar phenomenon of failing to retrieve a word from memory, expressing a moment of tension in the form of the design.

Somewhere in the Middle, To the Top and Rest pay homage to Wilhelm Wagenfeld and Carl Jakob Jucker’s MT8 Lamp – also known as the Bauhaus Lamp. Their work was designed in 1924, and is one of the purest expressions of Bauhaus theory. This series features cut opaline spheres resting on different configurations of identical brass sections.

A mouth-blown opaline sphere rests on a solid brass bar, evoking a play of balance and stillness. The idea of a movement caught in a second of suspension is a recurring theme in Michael Anastassiades’ designs, which often trigger the imagination of the viewers, offering them a playful yet meditative moment of contemplation.

The Onyx Light is carved from a single block of onyx, carefully selected for its transparency and veins. There are about 20 pieces that come out of a single block, with each batch bearing similarities in terms of character and colour. Each Onyx Light series is a unique edition, created when we are lucky enough to find blocks of onyx that carry the necessary qualities.

The Composition series includes a floor and table lamp. They consist of sculptural, elementary forms stacked to create simple, balanced compositions. Each fixture is formed of two cylindrical legs balancing a circular disk, with the Floor Composition grounded by a solid sphere. Illumination is through a bespoke LED circuit with a perspex diffuser, which softly distributes the light downward. Both Floor Composition and Table Composition are produced in an earthen red, powder-coated finish based on a brass patina developed specially by the Studio.

On My Mind is a table or floor lamp that resembles a head resting on its side, or a balloon lightly touching the ground. The shape of the lamp allows it to roll freely on surfaces, allowing the light to be expressed through movement, rather than just as a stationary object.

This collection of fixtures uses the standard unit of the light tube as a measure. Through the alternation of 1m and 0.5m modules, it creates a rhythmic language of recording space. The designs evolve as a parallel progression of rods, combining five variations of standard linear LED bulbs and metal tubes of the same diameter. With this series, Michael Anastassiades expands the compositional possibilities of some of the most structural elements of lighting, engaging the viewer in a rigorous yet playful exercise in measuring.

The Mobile Chandeliers are delicate structures balanced in perfect equilibrium. Constructed following the principles of a mobile, these are arrangements of linear tubes, geometric light sources, reflective surfaces and counterbalancing weights. The pieces rotate freely and delicately, creating an ever-changing lighting configuration unique to the space they occupy. Each Mobile Chandelier is individually tailored to ensure the balance of its approximately 200 hand-crafted patinated-brass components. Every piece is unique in its dimension and compositional balance, due to the varying weight of the mouth-blown opaline glass.

In Between is a powerful, fully dimmable uplighter consisting of two identical aluminium discs separated by a transparent glass tube. The upper disc appears to be floating as it elegantly projects the light upwards. Running along the middle of the tube is a thin cable that expresses the power source of the light – a subtle reference to the famous Bauhaus table lamp designed by Wilhelm Wagenfeld in 1924.

One of the most recognisable designs by Michael Anastassiades Studio, the Ball Lights consists of pendants, wall pendants and ceiling and wall sconces. Designed around existing incandescent bulbs of that time, the project began as an exercise to abstract the bulb into a perfectly spherical ball, celebrating its perfect shape by repeating it in metal.

The result of a carefully curated take on an existing series of products, the Brass Architectural collection brings together the simplicity and elegance that characterises Michael Anastassiades’ aesthetic. Through a formal economy of shapes and materials, these architectural features call for an understanding of luxury as a discreet presence: glass, brass and nickel articulate a geometric, minimalistic alphabet of forms that adorn the space with luminosity akin to a piece of jewellery.

White Porcelain Series is a lighting collection comprising of sconces with an emphasis on materiality and simplicity of form. It is distinguished by refined proportions and sophisticated, invisible fixture details that reintroduce porcelain within a contemporary context and distances it from the utilitarian language with which it is often associated. Referring to the Bauhaus porcelain lights used in the 1930s, this simplified version is slip casted to provide a tough, resistant finish. Due to the manufacturing process, each piece is inherently unique.

The Philosophical Egg was realised as an homage to the mysterious pendant that appears in the famous altar painting Brera Madonna by Piero della Francesca. The various fixtures featured reflect the same architectural approach that the artist represents in the painting. The refined composition of primordial shapes with an illuminated ostrich-egg-shaped oval allows the light to become the central focus of the space. The collection comprises various pendants and sconces and features a new petrol blue powder-coated finish.

The Tube Chandelier was designed in 2006 as the first light for the Michael Anastassiades collection. The design for this fixture began as an exercise of subtraction. The challenge was to suspend the minimum number of incandescent light tubes in a sculptural configuration to form a vertical chandelier. The supports needed to be discreet so when lit, only three glowing lines would be seen.

Inspired by the shape of fishing hooks, this collection of ceiling lamps evokes the image of a luminous sphere captured in three different configurations. Just like in angling, it consists of simply a single, double and triple hook. As often happens in his practice, Michael Anastassiades infuses the memory of modernist design with humorous narrative and figurative qualities. He references a common, familiar object and takes it through a process of abstraction, aiming to create a pure definition of what a light source can be.
